Staying Put’s Senior Leadership Team and CEO’s from around Yorkshire will be sleeping out at the Leeds United Stadium at Elland Road to raise £8,000.
They will be doing this to raise awareness for those who are at risk of homelessness due to domestic abuse. Almost 32% of homeless women said domestic abuse contributed to their homelessness.
From 7pm on October 19th, to 7am on the 20th October, the team will be sleeping on a concrete concourse on the East Stand. Average temperatures for October at night will be 6 degrees Celsius, although the team will have sleeping bags and pillows to sleep on.
“Domestic abuse is a leading cause of homelessness in this country. For women, it is ‘the’ leading cause of homelessness,” explains Yasmin Khan, CEO Staying Put. “Although recent legislation has been developed to give survivors of domestic abuse priority access to housing, the demand for social housing far outweighs supply”
The funds raised will be spent on our Refuges- making them as welcoming and as comfortable to ensure that when someone leaves abuse, they feel safe, secure to recover from the trauma of abuse.
“I’m excited to take part but I don’t think I’ll get much sleep!” states Anita Pluckwell, Head of Operations & Client Care. “But when one in four people experience domestic abuse, it really hits home that some people have no option but to sleep rough.”
Other organisations taking part include Leeds college of building, Iceotope, Leeds 2023, Senior Stairlifts and De Veigh Ltd.
