Welcome to 16 Days of Activism against gender- based violence- an annual international campaign that begins on the 25 November (the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women), and runs until 10 December (Human Rights Day.)
The theme for this year is “Unite to end violence against women this winter”. We’re asking you to pledge your promises on how you will tackle domestic abuse. This could be something as simple as donating to Staying Put, tackling worrying behaviour or simply by being a listening ear to a friend, family member or colleague experiencing domestic abuse.
The campaign was started by activists at the inauguration of the Women’s Global Leadership Institute in 1991. It is used as an organizing strategy by individuals and organizations around the world to call for the prevention and elimination of violence against women and girls.
Thirty- three years after 16 Days of Activism was launched, our services are still very much needed. From April 2023- March 2024 we had:
- 18,386 total enquiries through our One Front Door helpline
- 7,086 referrals to our community service
- 422 referrals to our accommodation service
- 99% positive feedback from clients using the One Front Door helpline
This year, there have been some great steps towards tackling gender- based violence, there is still a lot of work to do, however.
You will see from our social channels our colleagues’ have all made their pledges of how they intend to support people experiencing domestic abuse and sexual violence. You can also see that we have made a commitment to helping survivors of domestic abuse get back into work, through membership to the Employers Domestic Abuse Covenant, a pledge by employers to support women affected by abuse to enter or re-enter the workplace. Finally, a simple action you could take is to donate to us. Your generosity will empower us to continue our life saving work, creating meaningful change in our community. Every contribution, no matter how small, helps us keep women and girls safe from domestic abuse and sexual violence. You can donate online here.
Thank you, stay safe.
